Veteran Edmonton Oilers centre suffers injury setback

The Edmonton Oilers are already battling the injury bug despite the 2026-27 season having yet to get underway.

Before training camp began, GM Stan Bowman confirmed that Matt Savoie, Mattias Janmark, Alec Regula, and recently signed goaltender Frederik Andersen would be unavailable throughout training camp due to injury. It sounds as though their injuries could extend into the regular season.

The news on the injury front only got worse for the Oilers on Friday, as head coach Mike Babcock confirmed that Jason Dickinson suffered a setback on an ankle injury he had been dealing with during last year’s playoffs.

The 31-year-old, who is expected to have a big role in the Oilers’ bottom-six forward group this season, was in noticeable pain when exiting the ice during practice last week.

No timeline has been revealed, but it sounds as though he could be sidelined to start the regular season.

“I don’t really know what’s going on there. I know that he’s had a setback. A huge part of it is that the physical part is one thing, the mental part is another. If you keep having these setbacks, it’s hard.

“It’s the same thing [from the playoffs],” Babcock told reporters. “I’m not the medical guy, so I don’t know. It looked like we were really advancing. He tweaked it. Thought we were coming good, [but] yesterday was a tough day. Does that last two days, does it last two weeks? I don’t know. I’m not a doctor.”

The Oilers acquired Dickinson from the Chicago Blackhawks at last season’s trade deadline. He suited up for 17 regular season games following the deal, posting a goal and three helpers. He was a big contributor in the playoffs, registering two goals and three points in the four games he dressed for.
