Edmonton Oilers snag two new players in trade with Chicago Blackhawks

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired two new players after making another trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Just two days after swinging a deal for defenceman Connor Murphy, Oilers GM Stan Bowman turned his attention to the forward group.

The team announced on Wednesday that they had acquired centermen Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach from the Blackhawks in exchange for Andrew Mangiapane and a top-12 protected 2027 first-round pick.

Chicago will be retaining 50 per cent of Dickinsin’s $4.25-million salary.

The Oilers had been rumoured to be interested in adding a third-line centre to the fold heading into the week. Dickinson could fill that spot, although he has not had great offensive results with Chicago this season, scoring just six goals and 13 points in 47 games.

He does, however, have some pretty good defensive metrics and was a member of the Blackhawks’ league-leading penalty-kill unit, along with Murphy. It’s clear that Edmonton is intent on fixing its defensive shortcomings.

The Blackhawks will be retaining 50 per cent of Dickinson’s $4.25 million cap hit. That, along with dumping Mangiapane’s $3.6 million cap hit, will help make the money work from an Oilers’ perspective.

Dach is a 23-year-old forward who is a former 2021 second-round draft pick of the Blackhawks and a local product from St. Albert. He spent the entirety of this season in the NHL, scoring three goals and nine points through 53 games, and carries a $825,000 cap hit.

Dickinson is set to become a UFA this summer, while Dach will be an RFA.
