Frederik Andersen injured and so are three of his new Edmonton Oilers teammates
The Edmonton Oilers may not be done bringing in external help after all.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Oilers announced that Matt Savoie, Mattias Janmark, Alec Regula, and recently signed goaltender Frederik Andersen will all miss training camp next month due to injury.
There’s little surprise to see Janmark and Regula skipping camp, as they continue to recover from procedures last season. Janmark suited up for just 43 outings with the Oilers in 2025-26, while Regula played a combined 49 games split between the NHL and AHL.
As for Andersen, the often banged-up goaltender is said to have suffered an injury during an off-season training session. It’s concerning, given how much time Andersen has been forced to miss in recent seasons.
Savoie also suffered an injury during an off-season training session.
Andersen and Savoie are expected back by about late October, per TSN’s Ryan Rishaug.
Given the status of both Janmark and Savoie, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer seemed to hint on X that management could look to the free-agent market to add another forward. If they do so, fans should expect it to be one who can kill penalties.

One potential option the Oilers could consider if they are looking for familiarity is Adam Henrique. The 36-year-old’s game has regressed at five-on-five, though he was still a key part of the Oilers’ penalty kill this past season, averaging 1:39 in ice time per game when down a man. The only forward in Edmonton’s lineup who averaged more was Jason Dickinson at 1:52.
Another option could be Curtis Lazar, who, like Henrique, remains available in free agency. The 31-year-old didn’t play a ton on the penalty kill for the Oilers last season, but does have plenty of experience in that area throughout his 617-game NHL career.
It’s worth noting that, thanks in large part to trading Darnell Nurse, the Oilers have roughly $4.73 million in cap space.
These updates, specifically Savoie and Andersen’s, are not what the Oilers need in what they hope will be a bounce-back 2026-27 season.
