Edmonton Oilers cut 15 players and put three of them on waivers

The Edmonton Oilers cut down their training camp roster in significant fashion on Friday morning.

Following Thursday’s outing against the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers have made 15 cuts as they look to get their roster sorted ahead of their season opener on Tuesday.

Seven of the 15 cuts are players who have been re-assigned to the Bakersfield Condors:

  • Tomas Cibulka (D)
  • Connor Clattenburg (F)
  • Quinn Hutson (F)
  • Viljami Marjala (F)
  • William Nicholl (F)
  • Aku Raty (F)
  • Connor Ungar (G)

There was some hope that Connor Clattenburg or Quinn Hutson could stand out enough during camp to start the season with the Oilers, but they were apparently unable to do so. Fans shouldn’t be surprised to see one, or perhaps both, called up at some point during the season.

Meanwhile, four of the Oilers’ cuts have been reassigned to their respective junior hockey clubs:

  • Rudolfs Berzkalns (F)
  • Caden Harvey (F)
  • David Lewandowski (F)
  • Andrew Robinson (D)

No real surprises here, as there is still plenty of room to grow for these prospects before they are ready to make an impact at the NHL level.

That said, fans will want to keep an eye on David Lewandowski moving forward. The 19-year-old possesses a ton of skill and is primed for a big season with the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades.

As for the final three cuts, they are players who have been placed on waivers. All 31 other NHL organizations will now have the chance to claim them:

  • Josh Brown (D)
  • Riley Stillman (D)
  • Eduards Tralmaks (F)

Again, no surprises here whatsoever. Both Brown and Stillman will continue to serve as veteran pieces with the Condors, but could potentially play a few NHL games here or there depending on injuries. That is, of course, if neither of them are claimed.

With these latest cuts, the Oilers training camp roster now sits at 33 (18 forwards, 11 defencemen, four goalies). That means that there are still 10 cuts to be made between now and their season opener.
