Edmonton’s long-anticipated rec centre and indoor velodrome is in the home stretch to completion, with the city saying construction is still on time and on budget.

If you’ve noticed the stunning copper-clad dome taking shape in Coronation Park over the past while, the city expects it to be open early next year.

According to the most recent update from the City of Edmonton, all major interior and exterior work is complete on the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, and crews are now focused on finishing touches.

The cycling track is installed, with minor railing modifications underway. Landscaping is expected to wrap up before the end of summer, while cleaning, equipment installation, and final system testing continue inside.

Once construction is done, preparations will take several months. That includes furnishing the building and applying for a Category 2 designation from the Union Cycliste Internationale — a certification that would qualify Edmonton to host international cycling events.

The $153.4-million facility, located in Coronation Park near 111th Avenue and 142nd Street, is meant to serve both community recreation and high-performance sport. It will feature a 250-metre indoor velodrome, fitness centre, climbing wall, gymnasiums, multi-purpose studios and an indoor play space.

It will also connect to the rehabilitated Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, with both set to open together in early 2026.
