We took a trip to Edmonton's newest quick-service breakfast spot and here’s what we got

This new quick-service breakfast spot is taking Edmonton by storm, and we just had to take a peek.

Hatch’d is Edmonton’s newest breakfast spot, serving up premium egg-centric hand-held sandwiches, burritos, and bowls. It’s become the latest hot spot for breakfast on the go, which is no surprise, considering its prime location next to the University of Alberta and the hospital.

We were invited out to take a closer look at this breakfast place, and we were given the opportunity to try some of its most appetizing dishes. Without further ado, let’s get into our deep dive on Hatch’d.

Bringing quick-service breakfast to Edmonton

“Edmonton has proven to be an exceptional launchpad for many successful concepts,” starts Brett Verhulst, brand lead. “If you look at Booster Juice, Boston Pizza, Famoso, so many great concepts have started in Edmonton.”

Hatch’d is looking to be the next concept to have begun in Edmonton and expand to a national level, all while holding true to its brand values: exceptional quality food at the speed of convenience.

“The people of Edmonton supported those concepts because they felt like it was their own. We know that with the ingredients we’ve chosen, if we execute at a high level, the city is going to fall in love with Hatch’d,” said Verhulst.

The team felt that regardless of where Hatch’d was going to be situated, everyone works different routines and, because of that, having all-day breakfast is something that is going to be important for everyone. Having and providing a high-quality breakfast for people, no matter the time of day, was something very important to them, and it’s obvious with the excellent ingredients and extensive thought process they’ve put into the food and drink.

Additionally, having the hospital and university within close proximity was critical for success, says Verhulst.

With limited quality hospital options, Verhulst is certain the offerings are quite different from many in the area, setting them apart. In addition, instead of offering “fast-food” items, where customers pay less for lower quality, Hatch’d is focused on the same speedy delivery with better, quality ingredients and flavour— hence the “quick-service” part of things.

Another thing setting Hatch’d apart is its matcha offerings. Currently, it serves iced matcha in the flavours original, strawberry, mango, and the seasonal ube.

“I think one of our biggest philosophies with this brand is providing the fuel for everybody’s day. We do that with some great options in the kitchen, but matcha has the energy, the cognitive rejuvenation, as well as all the other health benefits that really tie in with what we’re doing,” says Verhulst.

We opted for the Classic Iced Matcha Latte. It was absolutely delicious, and definitely one of the best matchas we’ve tried in the city so far.

Hatch’d went through an assortment of matcha powders before eventually landing on this one, which we have to commend. It’s not grainy, has a pleasant green colour, and is served in the cutest sealed can.

Despite not being a traditional breakfast item, Hatch’d has successfully brought matcha into the fold.

As for its eats… Hatch’d absolutely blew us away.

We started with The Bacon Sando, which featured double-smoked bacon, the perfect mix of crunch and chew, a yolky egg, and a soft bun. It also has its own chipotle ketchup, which was unexpected yet provided the perfect faint heat to complement the sandwich itself.

It came with hashbrowns, which were excellently seasoned with a nice crispy exterior and soft potato interior. The sandwich meal is an amazing way to start the morning.

The Smok’n Chick Poutine was our other choice, elegantly served with hollandaise sauce, loaded up with soft scrambled eggs, and gives you more of those show-stopping hashbrowns to round off the bowl. The mix of all the flavours absolutely melts on your tongue, giving you the best type of fuel to continue working, walking, or just going on with your day.

All the dishes were fantastic, together making the perfect meal imaginable.

If you find yourself in the University area, Hatch’d is, no questions asked, one of the prime breakfast spots to hit up. Get your fix at this new restaurant, and prepare for an onslaught of deliciousness.
