Former Safeway in Sherwood Park undergoing a big retail makeover

A building that housed a longstanding Safeway in Sherwood Park is set to undergo a big retail revival this year.

The grocery store on Wye Road location at 985 Fir St. in Sherwood Park was closed last March, and has left many curious about what could be done with the large building.

Some plans seem to be in the works for the building, with the Alberta Major Projects website stating that the former Safeway grocery store, built approximately 35 years ago, will be subdivided within the building to create two retail spaces. The project will also modernize and improve the building, including selective demolition.

A building permit was issued by Strathcona County in December 2025, the provincial website said, with an estimated cost of $6.7 million for the project.

Daily Hive reached out to First Capital REIT regarding this project, which confirmed that it will be demising the former Safeway building into two tenants.

Looking at the First Capital REIT brochure for Village Market, the area where the former Safeway is located, the first west-facing retail space measures approximately 11,700 square feet, and something is coming soon; the second space is available at around 31,700 square feet.

It’s just one of numerous changes in the retail landscape in Sherwood Park. The massive L’OCA Quality Market closed its Sherwood Park location this week, and a big shopping plaza is in the works off the Anthony Henday at Baseline Road and Broadmoor Boulevard.
