A brand-new riverside trail is being built just north of Edmonton

Looks like even more green space will soon be accessible to people across the Edmonton region, with the City of St. Albert building a brand-new trail in the city’s northwest.
Work is underway to complete the Oakmont Trail, a new multi-use trail system that will connect the Blais Pedestrian Bridge to Boudreau Road along the north side of the Sturgeon River Valley.
The system has already seen its east portion open from the Blais Bridge to the trail beside 84PUL Orchard Court. The rest of the trail, including the new pedestrian bridge, will remain closed until construction is complete in 2026.
Other features of the trail include a wooden decked bridge and a boardwalk leading to a set of wooden stairs. This section will also remain closed until construction is finished in 2026, the city says.

Detours and road closures are not expected; however, residents can anticipate periods of increased construction-related traffic for the duration of the project.

Construction of the eastern portion of the trail, along with plantings and site restoration, was completed in 2025.
Work scheduled for 2026 includes construction of the bridge, boardwalk, and stairs, as well as the west and middle portions of the trail, along with additional plantings and site restoration. A timeline for the completion of the remaining portions has not yet been provided.
With us counting down the days until Hawrelak Park reopens to the public, the addition of even more outdoor space to the YEG region is music to our ears!
