Former Edmonton Oilers forward unexpectedly calls it a career at 27
A former Edmonton Oilers forward who appeared in 30 games for the team over the last two seasons has unexpectedly called it a career at just 27.
Noah Philp has announced his retirement from professional hockey, citing a “lack of motivation” for the game.
According to Swedish Hockey League club HV71, Philp has terminated his contract and is stepping away from professional hockey.
“I really want to apologize to HV71 and all involved regarding the timing of my decision, but I have decided to stop playing hockey,” Philp said in a statement shared by the club.
“My motivation for hockey is not fully there, and I’d rather be completely honest than not be fully invested in playing.”

The Canmore, Alta., native played 30 games in an Oilers uniform across two seasons, recording five points before being waived by the team on Dec. 28, 2025.
He was immediately claimed off waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes, where he played in two games before being assigned to their AHL farm team, the Chicago Wolves.
A few days before he was slated to become a free agent, Philp signed a 1+1 contract with HV71, where he was expected to play this upcoming season with a player option to return for a second year.
Just a month later, he’s stepping away. This is the second time Philp has retired from professional hockey.
In 2023, Philp called it a career following his rookie season with the Bakersfield Condors, saying he wanted to focus on things outside of hockey, including spending more time with family and friends in Calgary.
A year later, Philp returned and signed a one-year contract with the Oilers ahead of the 2024-25 season. Edmonton believed in him so much that they re-signed him in the offseason for $775,000.
Whether his motivation to play returns or not is a question only Philp can answer. For now, he’s stepping away from the sport for the second time before his 28th birthday.
