Edmonton Oilers lose forward Noah Philp on waivers

Noah Philp’s time with the Edmonton Oilers has come to an end.

Philp, who hasn’t played since Nov. 17 due to an upper-body injury, is finally healed up and set to return to action. After he was cleared to return, the Oilers chose to place him on waivers, and he was subsequently claimed on Monday.

Philp will head to another great team, as he was scooped up by the Carolina Hurricanes. Led by head coach Rod Brind’Amour, the ‘Canes are having another excellent season, sitting first in the Eastern Conference with a 23-11-3 record.

As for Philp, he’s logged just 30-career NHL games to date. The undrafted 27-year-old has had an unusual journey to the NHL, as he spent parts of two seasons playing with the University of Alberta before signing a professional contract with the Oilers.

Following Philp’s rookie season with the Bakersfield Condors, he stepped away from the game for the entire 2023-24 campaign before returning in 2024-25. He was able to suit up for 15 games with the Oilers that same season, registering two assists.

Philp was able to crack the Oilers lineup out of training camp this season. In 15 games, he’s scored two goals and three points while averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time.

Philp was re-signed by the Oilers on a one-year, $775,000 deal early this past offseason. Upon conclusion of his current deal, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Getting back into the lineup on a regular basis with the Oilers was going to be difficult for Philp, given that several others, including Jack Roslovic, have returned. It remains to be seen what type of role he will play with the Hurricanes, but, for the time being, he will continue to remain in the NHL.
