"Heavily armed" suspect threw Molotov cocktail, fired shots inside Edmonton City Hall: police

A “heavily armed” suspect who police said was carrying a long gun that could fire multiple rounds quickly has been arrested after Edmonton City Hall was evacuated Tuesday morning.

At around 10:25 am on Tuesday, loud noises that sounded like gunshots rang out, interrupting Councillor Aaron Paquette, who was speaking to a motion.

The conversation continued moments later, with Mayor Amarjeet Sohi responding to Paquette before another interruption by the same sound.

At that time, councillors were asked to leave the room, and the meeting was put into recess.

Edmonton Police received a weapons complaint and responded to the situation.

Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee said several groups were in the building at that time, including a class of Grade 1 students.

McFee said that the suspect entered City Hall through the parkade, walked through the building, and fired multiple shots, shattering glass.

The suspect also had a number of Molotov cocktails and threw one inside an elevator, leading to a “small fire.”

No motive has yet been identified, and police are continuing to investigate the incident. They said they believe the suspect acted alone.

No injuries have been injuries, police said, and there is no threat to public safety. Roads in the area that were closed have now reopened.
