Members of the Alberta NDP Caucus are citing their concerns about Bill 22 in an open letter to the Chair of the Legislative Offices Committee.

In the letter, the NDP caucus members are requesting an emergency meeting of the Committee prior to the passage of the bill.

Bill 22: the Reform of Agencies, Boards, and Commissions and Government Enterprises Act, which calls for the removal of the elections commissioner, raised some concerns amongst members of the official opposition.

“The Office of the Elections Commissioner has received over 800 complaints since it commenced operations. Given that the Commissioner has not had the opportunity to present his first Annual Report to this committee, we are gravely concerned that this committee is being bypassed in consideration of Bill 22,” says the letter.

“The Executive counsel, through this bill, is in fact trying to supersede the role of the committee and through it the members of this house.”

The letter was signed by Edmonton Mill Woods MLA Christina Gray, Edmonton Gold Bar MLS Marlin Schmidt, Edmonton Centre MLA David Shepherd, and Edmonton Manning MLA Heather Sweet.

The letter comes a day after Alberta NDP Leader, Rachel Notley was removed from legislature for refusing to apologize to the house leader for comments she made regarding the same bill.
