Canadians could soon see upgrades on their WestJet flights, with refreshed cabins featuring new layouts and more options to fit every budget.

On Sept. 23, WestJet announced that its economy-only Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-800 aircraft will undergo major upgrades and cabin reconfigurations that will provide travellers with various seating options at different price points on flights.

The upgraded cabin will also feature slim-line seats that create additional space to accommodate an additional seating row. WestJet stated that doing so helps reduce the cost per seat, providing travellers with affordable fares and options.

“The cabin has been thoughtfully designed to offer WestJet’s welcoming service at every budget,” said Samantha Taylor, the airline’s executive vice-president and chief experience officer. “It reflects our commitment to elevating every aspect of the travel experience and meeting guest demand for a broader range of product offerings.”

The first of 43 planned aircraft with the redesigned cabins will be in use starting in October 2025.

New economy seats will have adjustable headrests and enhanced cushion and back support. Seats will have a fixed recline design that “helps preserve personal space,” so you won’t have to worry about bothering the person behind you as you try to take a little nap. Travellers who want extra legroom still have the option to book seats in the exit row.

Flyers can choose from three types of standard seating in economy. The back of the cabin will offer less space (rows 20 to 31), while the middle will offer a bit more space (rows 15 to 19). Seats closer to the front of the cabin will have the most space (rows 10 to 12).

Additionally, in-seat power sources and extra holders for your phone or tablet will be available, allowing you to watch your shows without having to hold your device throughout the flight.

The economy cabin will also feature an Extended Comfort section behind Premium, which will be separated from the economy cabin by a divider. It will include 36 seats and extra legroom.

Travellers looking for extra comfort can opt for seats in the refreshed Premium seating section, which provides the most legroom.

The upgraded Premium cabins will feature 12 new seats, identical to those found on WestJet’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. Each seat is designed with ergonomically contoured cushions, a reclining back, and a large headrest with four-way adjustment, offering WestJet passengers more comfort on their flights.

Further upgrades

WestJet’s cabin overhaul will also include revamped lavatories and galleys.

The airline is also installing WestJet Wi-Fi presented by Telus. The high-speed internet service will provide streaming-level speeds across its fleet and will be available in all its Boeing 737-800 and MAX-8 aircraft by the end of 2025. WestJet Wi-Fi is free for Rewards members.
