Punjabi music made history this week on late-night TV.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Canadian Punjabi superstar Karan Aujla stepped onto the stage of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and made history as the first Punjabi-Canadian artist ever to appear on the show.

He kicked things off with a fiery medley of “Boyfriend” and “Gabhru!”, tracks from his record-breaking new album P-Pop Culture, and the crowd went wild.

Even Fallon himself couldn’t contain his excitement, telling the audience, “That is how you do it right there”, following Aujla’s performance.

The late-night performance comes just days after Aujla’s album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart with 12.4 million streams.

That’s the highest debut ever for a Punjabi-language album in Canada.

Aujla, who moved from Punjab to Metro Vancouver as a teen, once lived in Surrey and attended Burnaby South Secondary.

Now one of the region’s proudest exports, the 27-year-old blends his Punjabi roots with Canadian influences, a journey that helped him make history as the first artist of Punjabi descent to win a JUNO Fan Choice Award.

Fans react to Karan Aujla’s Jimmy Fallon performance

The official Tonight Show YouTube video lit up with comments from excited fans.

“Bro is so goated that he has 3 own written songs on Fallon show
 that’s a real flex â€đŸŽžâšĄïž,” wrote a commenter.

Others zeroed in on the nerves-turned-energy, “He appears anxious in the first verse, but then
 AUJLEAAAAA! You killed it!”

And of course, Ikky got his flowers too.

Ikky, a Brampton-born producer behind many of today’s biggest Punjabi hits, joined Aujla on stage for the performance. “The fact that he brought Ikky here just shows how much he loves him, my goat đŸ«¶đŸ»,” said one commenter.

One viewer wrote, “Never seen that kind of energy on Jimmy Fallon before.”

As if the performance wasn’t enough, Aujla also managed to get Fallon on his feet, literally.

In a playful post-show moment, the singer gave Fallon a quick crash course in bhangra, teaching him a few moves to the delight of the studio audience.

Clips tagged #KaranOnFallon are now flying across Instagram and TikTok, showing the host bouncing along (a little awkwardly, but full of effort).

It was a perfect culture-meets-comedy moment, the kind that makes late-night TV magic.

Aujla now joins fellow Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh,  who hit the Fallon stage earlier this year, in bringing Punjabi music to mainstream American audiences.

And if the fan response is any sign, this is just the beginning.
