Spring is the peak season to check out waterfalls, and luckily, there are some pretty great ones right near Calgary.

As the snow and ice melt away, the water starts rushing through rivers, creeks, and canyons across Alberta, turning the already scenic spots into fast-moving, stunning displays.

From quick roadside stops to short hikes with big payoffs, here are just a few of the best waterfalls near Calgary to explore this spring.

Johnston Canyon

Johnston Canyon is one of the most iconic waterfall hikes in Banff National Park. It’s especially dramatic in the spring when the water surges through the narrow canyon. The lower and upper falls are both accessible by well-maintained trails, making it a must-visit stop for an amazing waterfall.

Elbow Falls

Located around 45 minutes west of Calgary, Elbow Falls is an easy roadside stop that packs beautiful scenery in spring. When the snow melts upstream, Elbow Falls becomes significantly more powerful, making it a quick but rewarding stop.
