
The Times Higher Education (THE) 2027 World University Ranking was just released, and the University of Calgary has jumped up quite a few spots from previous years.
The ranking looks at over 2,000 research-intensive universities globally and assesses them based on 17 performance indicators, which are divided into five pillars covering their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
The University of Calgary ranked 185th overall with a score of 59.9, up from 200th last year and from its position in the 201st – 250th group in 2024.

It ranked eighth in Canada on the list, up from its ninth-place spot last year. It scored a 39.9 for teaching, 44.7 for research environment, 84,7 for research quality, 88.7 for industry, and 82 for international outlook.
The University of Alberta also made the cut, landing in 118th place globally and the fifth best in Canada. The University of Toronto was the top Canadian university on the list, coming in 22nd place, followed by McGill University in 43rd and the University of British Columbia in 44th.
Globally, the University of Oxford took the top spot with an overall score of 97.9, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University.
Earlier this year, the University of Calgary landed on another list of the world’s top universities, coming in the top 300 out of 8,000 universities globally.
