Inside Calgary's newest coffee shop offering wood-fired sandwiches and dirty soda

Calgary has just welcomed a brand-new coffee and sandwich shop, which is poised to be a haven for foodies and music lovers alike.

Uncommon Drip is one of the latest additions to Calgary’s sandwich scene, operating on Edmonton Trail. Offering a hotspot for coffee and sandwich enthusiasts, we naturally had to pay a visit.

Stepping through the doors, it is clear from the outset that music is a huge part of the Uncommon Drip experience. There’s an enormous Mac Miller mural adorning one of its walls, as well as artwork depicting icons such as Amy Winehouse. The soundtrack here is classic hip-hop, and on Saturdays, DJs will be on site, taking the experience to the next level.

One of the most noticeable features taking centre stage behind the counter is the enormous wood-fired oven, used to prep its sandwich offerings.

The spot offers a couple of breakfast sandwiches, available before 11 a.m., such as the Happy Daze, loaded with a fried egg, bacon, cheddar, caramelized onion and maple mayo, served on a cheesy jalapeño bagel.

But no fear if you do miss out on its breakfast dishes, as Uncommon Drip offers six different wood-fired sandos later in the day. We opted for The Cut, a ciabatta bun stacked with mortadella, salami, ham, provolone, burnt tomato, sprouts, and garlic mayo.

The bread had the perfect crispy crust and a soft interior, topped with thick slices of meat. The slight spiciness of the salami was countered by the garlic mayo to create a pretty delicious sandwich. We can see ourselves working our way through the menu.

In addition to classic sips like lattes, cappuccinos, chai, and matcha lattes, Uncommon Drip also offers some unique beverage options, including its chocolate strawberry lattebanana latte, and iced Earl Grey lemonade.

We tried the decadent iced tiramisu latte, which was rich and delicious with a nice balance of espresso and chocolate.

For those wanting to skip the coffee or tea, Uncommon Drip also offers a wide selection of dirty sodas. We’re intrigued by The Spins, a base of Sprite paired with blue raspberry and strawberry cold foam. The pop can also be subbed with Monster for an extra boost of energy, so do what you will with that information.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, Uncommon Drip is well worth the visit.
