A popular, family-owned Vietnamese restaurant has been forced to close its doors after operating for over 15 years.

Since opening, Tamarind Vietnamese Grill & Noodle House has been a staple for Vietnamese cuisine in Calgary. However, in a heartfelt message on social media, the Nguyen family, who operate the restaurant, shared the news that Tamarind would be closing its doors.

“After more than 15 wonderful years serving Calgary, it breaks our family’s hearts to share that after today’s dinner service (Tuesday, September 30) we are forced to close our doors,” the family said in an Instagram post.

According to the family, the reason for the closure is that the lease had “abruptly come to an end” at its 908 12th Ave. SW location.

“This space has been so much more than a restaurant — it has been our second home. Within these walls, we have shared countless meals, stories, celebrations, and friendships. Your kindness, loyalty, and love have sustained us through every season, and we are forever grateful for the community that has grown around our family’s little kitchen.”

During its long stint in the Beltine, Tamarind was known for its menu of authentic Vietnamese dishes, including pho, salads, stir-fries, and many more. The spot was also a relatively early adopter of plant-based food, transitioning to a fully vegan menu in 2014.

However, despite closing this chapter, the Nguyen family added that they hope this will be a temporary farewell until Tamarind is able to find a new home to continue its legacy.

“We hope and pray to resume service at a new and more fitting venue, where we can continue to serve you with the same care and spirit that has guided us from the beginning.”

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Tamarind will find a new location very soon.
