Team behind DOPO opens New York-style tavern in Calgary
A brand-new New York-style tavern has just opened in Calgary, and you’ll need to be fast to snag a reservation.
From the talented team behind some of Calgary’s most buzzworthy restaurants, including DOPO and Bar Rocca, Penny Crown Tavern is bringing a taste of the Big Apple to Marda Loop.
Tony Migliarese, owner of Penny Crown, DOPO and more, told Dished that ideas for a new restaurant came around six months into DOPO’s first year, when a new space became available.
“We had such quality staff who wanted to challenge themselves and do more. It’s just a team full of these really qualified people. Chef David Leeder and I looked at it, and we said we should take this opportunity. Someone else will go in there and do something. It might as well be us,” Migliarese explained.

The team travelled to New York, where the idea for Penny Crown really took shape.
“We went to these taverns there. They were so much fun with so much character. There were buildings that looked like they had been there for hundreds of years. The lights were dim, and the music was perfect, so we wanted to recreate that here,” he added.
While the menu offers everything from mussels to baked scallops, one menu item everyone should try, according to Migliarese, is the burger.
“It’s an Alberta beef burger that the chef’s been working on for many years, and we work with a cattle rancher just north of Edmonton. I’m already hearing, in the first few days we’re open, that’s all people are talking about. So get the burger.”
Penny Crown Tavern is now open, and while reservations are open, there will be limited space for walk-ins.
