Inside the Alberta restaurant that's a must-visit on your next road trip

Winter may be fast approaching, but road trip season never ends. Calgarians are extremely lucky to have so many incredible small towns just a short drive away, and plenty of incredible foodie hotspots to discover.
One of those is The Westwood, a food truck turned restaurant, that has become a favourite with locals and tourists alike for its casual, laid-back vibes and delicious bites.
Having first launched as a trailer in 2016, The Westwood has lived several lives, finally moving to the historic Black Diamond Bakery location on Centre Avenue in 2023.
Inside The Westwood

The light and bright spot is both modern with some neon signs and its huge Westwood light installation in the back of the restaurant, it still holds plenty of Western charm, with adorable touches such as the unique, vintage salt and pepper shakers on each table.
The space is instantly welcoming, with plenty of large tables for families and groups, and space for those popping in for a pitstop.

What’s on the menu?
Variety is the spice of life, and The Westwood is going to have something for everyone, from apps and snacks to bowls and burgers.
With an emphasis on local produce, The Westwood is also especially good for those with gluten intolerances. While the menu isn’t entirely gluten-free, its batters and fryers are all gluten-free.
As first-timers to the restaurant, we opted to check out some of the best-sellers, and if there’s one dish that seems to be a firm favourite, it’s the bison burger.

Featuring a hefty bison patty, smoked cheddar, fried dill pickles, tomato, onion, arugula, bourbon bbq sauce and garlic aioli, we can see why it’s so popular. It’s hefty, flavourful and the perfect fuel for any road trip.
Hot tip, visit on a Thursday and check out The Westwood’s Queso skirt pulled pork tacos, another favourite from the spot.

With house-smoked pulled pork in BBQ sauce, chipotle crema, a crispy cheddar skirt, avocado and pickled onions in a corn tortilla, it’s worth the mid-week trip alone. So fresh and tasty with perfect crispy cheesy edges.
After visiting, we can see why The Westwood has garnered such a fanbase over the years, and it’s definitely somewhere we would visit whenever we’re in the Diamond Valley.
