As recommended by health officials, if you choose to participate in events outside of your home, please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including proper physical distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent handwashing. If you are sick, please stay home.

It seems that there’s no end to the fun outdoor activities popping up across Alberta this winter (and we’re not complaining), but Sylvan Lake’s newest attraction might just top the list.

The Town of Sylvan Lake has partnered up with Ice On Whyte to bring back the popular Ice Slide this month – and it’s their biggest slide yet.

This year, the attraction features three ice tracks (including a smaller slide for the kids), carvings of the Town of Sylvan Lake’s logo, igloo-style bricks, and illuminating lights.

This means that if you visit at night, not only do you get to enjoy a fun ride, but the already stunning ice structure will also be lit up and glowing for those Instagram photos.

The Ice Slide is open now, but the main event happens over Family Day weekend.

The Big Jig Ice Fishing Derby runs from February 13 to 15, and the slide is just one of several fun features of the weekend. Highlights include Valentine’s Day sleigh rides, a pass-the-poutine contest, “learn to fish” workshops, and cultural teachings.

As an added bonus, if you happen to actually attend the event for its main purpose, the winner of the catch-and-release ice fishing derby will take home a cash prize of $1,500 for the longest catch.

The Ice Slide is set up next to the skating rinks on Sylvan Lake, and both kids and kids-at-heart are sure to love it!

This icy structure is expected to last a week or two before melting, so make sure to check it out before it’s gone.
