Huge new development could bring over 1,000 homes to southwest Calgary

A massive new development could take shape in southwest Calgary, with plans calling for over 1,000 homes in Springbank Hill.
According to a land use application, the proposal covers roughly 53 hectares of undeveloped land. It includes a mix of housing types, from single-detached homes to townhouses and mid-rise apartment buildings.
The project is planned for a vacant site near 85th Street SW and 34th Avenue SW, an area that has yet to be built out to typical urban standards.
The application outlines plans for approximately 589 low-density homes, alongside more than 1,400 multi-residential units, bringing a significant housing boost to the city’s southwest.
The development would also include nearly three hectares of mixed-use space, which would be used for street-level shops and services, plus more than five hectares of parks and open space for future residents.

The proposal comes from Calgary-based developer Truman, with CivicWorks also listed as the applicant on the land use application, which is currently under review by the City of Calgary.
According to a spokesperson from Truman, the proposal will need approval from City Council at a public hearing before any development can move forward.
An open house is scheduled for May 7, 2026, at Ambrose University, where residents can learn more about the project and share any feedback.
This new development is just one of many projects coming to the city. Calgary YMCA and Calgary Public Library recently announced a 69,000 sq. ft. recreation centre and library proposed for west Calgary, and two new high rises are currently in the works near CF Chinook Centre.
