New Central Library is celebrating its first birthday this Saturday

Oct 30 2019, 10:20 pm

My, my, how the time flies.

The Central Library is already celebrating its first birthday this weekend, marking 365 days of books, visitors, and beautiful architecture.

It has been quite the year for the building, being featured in best-of lists by The New York Times (on more than one occasion), BBC, and others in the months since opening.

To celebrate the occasion — and to thank members, supporters, and the community — the Calgary Public Library will be throwing something of a party this Saturday.

Those who would like to partake will simply need to show up any time between 9 am and 4 pm (though the sooner the better, as the first 500 people through the doors will receive a gift).

There will also be free hot chocolate or coffee from Lukes until supplies last.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who many Calgarians will remember gave a speech on opening day, will be in attendance for a special storytime at 10:30 am. To follow will be what is described in the release from Calgary Public Library as a “Friendship Round Dance” that will be held from noon to 12:30 pm.

Buskers, performers, and art installations will be seen throughout the entire day (until 4 pm, that is) so even if you don’t make it for the morning events, be sure to swing by to check out all the fun, regardless.

A full list of events and performers can be found here.
