People lined up for over 36 hours to check out Calgary's new Krispy Kreme
The donut hype is real in Calgary, with Krispy Kreme making a grand return to the city, opening a brand-new location.
Calgarians tend to get excited about these huge launches, with Chick-fil-A garnering lines over 12 hours ahead of its grand opening last year. However, Krispy Kreme may have quite literally taken the cake.
One donut fan told Dished that he had actually gotten in line a staggering 36 hours before the store’s grand opening at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3.
As a self-declared Krispy Kreme superfan, Matt McKay isn’t new to the game, as he was also first in line when the donut chain opened its first Edmonton location last year. McKay, who lives just west of Calgary, ensured he was first in line by arriving at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 1.
“I’m just a big Krispy Kreme fan. They’re so delicious,” McKay told Dished.

“I was first in line back in December when they opened in Edmonton. So I just had to be first in line when they opened in Calgary.”
Luckily for McKay, the weather in Calgary was far better than his campout at Edmonton’s South Common location, which opened in December. Even so, McKay came armed with a camping chair, plenty of snacks and water, books, and his phone to keep him entertained.
For McKay, lining up so early is worth it in order to get his hands on his personal favourite, the signature Original Glazed donut.
“It’s just their dough. It just melts in your mouth. They’re so good, and when they’re fresh, hot off the line, nothing beats that,” McKay added.
As a fan of the Original Glazed, McKay’s long wait may just be worth it, as he was able to secure a golden ticket, giving him 12 free Original Glazed donuts every month for an entire year. He was also given the opportunity to turn on Krispy Kreme’s hot light for the very first time.
Krispy Kreme has now officially opened to the public, with its new location featuring a “donut theatre” where guests can watch donuts being made right before their eyes. It also features a drive-thru.
