We went to Calgary's new Krispy Kreme to see the 'donut theatre' — here's what we thought
When it comes to donuts, there’s probably no bigger name than Krispy Kreme. After disappearing from the city for years, Krispy Kreme is finally making its grand return to Calgary this week.
At Dished, we had the opportunity to take a look at the brand-new Krispy Kreme location, and it’s essentially like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, but for donuts.
Krispy Kreme is opening the doors to its new location at 9629 Macleod Trl., just down the street from Chick-fil-A. Not only will Calgarians be able to buy some of the chain’s most iconic donuts, but guests will also be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the donut-making process.

From its iconic green, red and white branding, to its huge sign declaring Krispy Kreme the home of the Original Glazed donut, you won’t be able to miss it, even from the busy Macleod Trail.
Walking inside the new outpost for the first time, it’s a sensory overload with a bright and fresh interior, and we were immediately hit by the delicious scent of freshly fried donuts, just ready to be eaten.

What’s incredibly exciting about the Calgary location is that it’s home to one of Krispy Kreme’s signature hot light donut theatres, where you can watch donuts being made right in front of your eyes. It’s an impressive operation, with dough being prepared, proofed, fried, and glazed right in front of your eyes in just a matter of minutes.
Hundreds of donuts are carefully rotated through a huge proofing machine, and you can see the perfectly shaped donuts growing in size before being shot into the fryer.
Our favourite part to watch was the glazing, where a literal waterfall of sugary goodness is drizzled over a seemingly endless supply of donuts. While it was incredibly tempting to reach in, we resisted.

In the windows of the location, large neon lights are displayed, and they are switched on to alert guests that donuts are being made. If you’re lucky enough to visit during these times, you’ll be able to get your hands on an original glazed donut, hot and straight from the line. While the Original Glazed donuts are delicious at any time, we’d highly recommend trying them fresh, as the experience is out of this world.
The spot also offers dozens of different flavours, such as strawberry iced with sprinkles, cake batter, maple iced glazed, and many more.

Of course, there’s no better match than coffee and donuts, and Krispy Kreme has an impressive selection of coffee, espresso-based drinks, and lemonade. If you’re an Original Glazed fiend, you can even get coffee based on the fan-favourite.
However, if you’re on the move, Krispy Kreme also offers a drive-thru, allowing you to pick up its signature donuts and freshly brewed coffee without leaving the car.

Krispy Kreme officially opens with a bang on June 3 at 7 a.m. The first 12 guests in line will receive a Golden Ticket, securing them a free dozen Original Glazed donuts every month for an entire year.
