New Calgary restaurant celebrating Indian cuisine and heritage opens

A brand-new restaurant celebrating the diverse regional cuisines of India has just opened in Calgary’s Victoria Park neighbourhood.
Kondattam Indian Kitchen & Bar has opened its doors at 1006 1 St. SE, right next to the newly opened Semantics Cafe. The new spot has been brought to life by the team behind Big Fish and Open Range, with owner Sudha Thangavel keen to showcase the warmth, authenticity, and vibrancy of Indian gatherings.
The restaurant aims to bring a “festival of authentic Indian cuisine and heritage” to the city, to such an extent that its name even stems from the Tamil word for “celebration.”
“Our menu is a fusion of traditional Indian dishes with a modern twist. From fiery North Indian tandoori delights to coconut-infused curries from the South, each dish is crafted to capture the authenticity and uniqueness of its regional origins,” Kondattam’s website says.

The spot also focuses on sustainable sourcing, supporting local farmers and producers as much as possible.
Kondattam’s menu is expansive. There are dozens of dishes, including soups and salads, chaat, dosas, curries, and biryani. While there are some classic crowdpleasers such as Butter Chicken and Paneer Tikka Masala, Kondattam also serves unique dishes, including its signature curry, carefully crafted using a blend of 16 spices originating from the Karaikudi region of Tamil Nadu.
Reservations for Kondattam are available now.
