One of the best sandwich shops in Alberta is hidden in Drumheller

Nestled in the heart of Drumheller is one of the best sandwich shops to be established in Alberta.
Heller Good Sandwiches is the lovechild of a wife and husband, serving up high-quality sandwiches in a place where you wouldn’t typically expect the best culinary scene. With a small, rotating, focused menu, these two dish out the most scrumptious sandwiches six days a week, open on Mondays, then Wednesday to Sunday.
We took a trip down to Drumheller this past weekend, and Heller Good was one of the stops we made on our tour (thanks to Travel Alberta).
Here, we got a taste of what Drumheller was really about.
The owners

“My background is cheffing,” says Chris Lorenz, one of the owners of Heller Good Sandwiches. “I worked in fine dining in Calgary for quite a while and then worked out in the U.S. in San Francisco in Michelin-starred places, and about eight years ago, I worked in Beijing as well.”
His wife, Candace Lorenz, laughs as she tells us her restaurant experience.
“I have no background in the restaurant world,” she tells us. “I’m a graphic designer. Chris covers the food side of things, and I cover the branding.”
In the branding and establishment of the shop, these two brought their punk background and live music into the swing of things. This means it’s not only a great restaurant, but it’s a lively community spot in Drumheller. Chris actually happens to run Cold Bones Fest as well, which takes place in the restaurant in addition to other places in the town.
Truly, this place has a lively spirit and great energy, which you can feel just walking in through the doors and talking with Chris and Candace.
The food

Enough about the vibes, let’s talk about what really matters most: the food.
We got a taste of the Beef N’ Cheddar as well as the Potato Salad.
First up, the sandwich.
It was incredible. Chris described sandwiches as the perfect vessel for fine dining in a casual space, and he was right. It’s extremely rich and fatty with the beef, while adding that extra tang with the pickled onions. The cheese adds the perfect touch at the end, and together, it makes for the perfect sandwich.
Don’t forget about the bread, though, as it’s soft and soaks up the juices of the sandwiches in the best way.
As for the potato salad, we’re speechless.
This writer has never liked potato salad, but man, was this little bowl absolutely incredible. The sour cream and garlic mayo combo, in addition to the fresh dill, makes this the best potato salad we’ve ever had. The balance between dressing and potato is perfect, making it worth the trip to the restaurant just for this side dish.
If you’re a sandwich fan or even a fan of a great potato salad, the drive to Drumheller is extremely worth it.
You will not regret your trek to Heller Good Sandwiches; in fact, you may find yourself making the same trip very, very soon.
