Turns out those green bins are actually pretty handy after all.
The City of Calgary is inviting residents to pick up free compost for their lawns and gardens this spring, starting this Sunday, May 12.

The nutrient-rich compost has been created out of the food and yard waste put into the green bins throughout the past year, and anyone looking to take the city up on their offer will be able to drive away with up to 100 litres of compost per vehicle.
The compost giveaway was first kicked off last May, and a release from the City of Calgary states that a total of 1.5 million kg of compost was given away throughout last spring, with 13,000 trips being made to the landfill.
“Last year’s compost giveaways were a huge success,” said Laura Hamilton, Waste Diversion Specialist with Waste and Recycling Services, in the release.
“Calgarians continue to do a great job composting and we are thrilled to invite them back to pick up compost they helped produce by using their green carts at home.”
The giveaway dates will be on Sundays May 12, 19, and 26 between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm.
Residents are expected to load the compost into the vehicles themselves and will need to bring the proper equipment (shovels, gloves, containers, and tarps) to get the job done.
The release from the city notes that all loads must be secured and covered before you will be allowed to leave with the compost and that drivers are reminded not to stop on the side of the road as it may impede traffic.
