Calgary Flames reveal beautiful new Pride Night jersey

The Calgary Flames are set to host their annual Pride Night later this month and they’ve turned to a local artist to help them out.

As is usual with theme nights, the Flames have enlisted a Calgary-based artist to help design a new logo and jersey for the event. The Pride Night duties have been handed to Sarah Slaughter, a digital artist who calls Alberta’s largest city home.

She was able to come up with a beautiful design for this year’s Pride Night, which includes Calgary’s iconic “Flaming C” logo with an intricate butterfly design inside in place of it’s usual red and yellow colour scheme.

“Exploring the intersection of Pride and the NHL, I found myself drawn to the symbol of butterflies,” Slaughter said in a release. “Universally associated with transformation, hope, and fresh beginnings, butterflies felt like a natural fit.

“Each slightly abstract butterfly I created uses the colours of the Pride flag, woven into the Calgary Flames logo to celebrate inclusivity and change.”

That butterfly pattern also appears to be inside the numbers on each jersey and is accompanied by a beautiful butterfly shoulder patch that uses the Flames’ red and yellow colour scheme.

Pride Night is meant to celebrate members of the LGBTQ2S+ community and show that the sport of hockey is an inclusive place for fans of all backgrounds to enjoy. While stunning, the Flames are barred from wearing these jerseys on the ice for warmups due to an NHL ban that was put in place last season.

However, fans who like the design will be able to get a chance to buy player-signed editions of this jersey, which will be put up for auction, with the proceeds going toward the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation’s inclusion program.

This is just the latest in a strong lineup of themed jerseys for the Flames this season. Last month the team revealed an amazing set of logos and a new jersey for their Lunar New Year game. They also enlisted another artist to create a very unique logo for the team’s South Asian Heritage game.

Pride Night in Calgary is set to go on March 14 when the Flames welcome Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche.
