Calgary Flames forward Ryan Lomberg didn’t mince words when asked about his thoughts on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Lomberg and the Flames were in Tampa last night to take on the Lightning, a team that the Flames’ gritty forward viewed as a rival for several seasons. Before signing with Calgary this past summer, he spent four seasons as a member of the Florida Panthers.
Understanding the Lightning/Panther rivalry, Sportsnet’s Ryan Leslie teed one up for Lomberg when he asked his thoughts about returning to Tampa to play. To little surprise, the exuberant 30-year-old hit it out of the park.
“I like the palm trees and the sunshine, but I f*cking hate this guys,” said a widely grinning Lomberg.
Perhaps the funniest moment of the entire clip was Leslie’s shock by the answer, as he lets out an audible “Wow,” before continuing with the interview.

While far from a media-trained response, this is the exact type of stuff that has quickly made Lomberg a fan favourite in Calgary. Whether it’s an authentic answer like this, him smiling from ear to ear after a big fight, or singing along to the national anthem, he has an infectious personality that fans absolutely love.
Unfortunately for Lomberg and the Flames, they were unable to pull out a victory last night, falling to the Lightning by a 3-0 final. With the loss, they remain one point behind the Vancouver Canucks for a playoff spot, albeit they have one game in hand.
They’ll look to jump back ahead of the Canucks with a win tomorrow afternoon versus the Florida Panthers.
