The Calgary Flames are reportedly targeting a blue line upgrade ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline.
The club has contacted the Boston Bruins inquiring about defenceman Brandon Carlo per Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco.
Carlo is a 6-foot-5 right-handed blueliner playing just shy of 19 minutes per night for the Bruins. He’s in the prime of his career at 28 years old and has two years left on his contract after this one, with a cap hit of $4.1 million.
The Bruins defenceman has nine points in 61 games so far this season. He’s scored between 14 and 16 points in each of the last three years and is an eye-popping +69 over that period.
Sounds like the #Flames have reached out on #nhlbruins defenseman Brandon Carlo. Teams have yet to dive into details, but CGY is interested.
Not too many players on BOS' roster not available for the right price.@DailyFaceoff

It’s not all good news with Carlo. Some of the advanced stats don’t paint a pretty picture of his performance this season. He ranks last among the eight Bruins defencemen who have played at least 15 games in both Corsi and expected goals share.
The addition of Carlo would help balance the Flames’ defence corps. They have some very strong options on the left, such as Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar, but lack that same quality on the right side. Carlo would help to fix that.
The Flames are still very much in the playoff race, holding the final Western Conference Wild Card spot with 22 games left to play. They aren’t expected to be major players by the deadline but are clearly looking to add depth pieces such as Carlo to help with the stretch run, as long as they can do so without mortgaging the future.
The Bruins are in the midst of a disappointing season, sitting two points outside the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Seven teams are within five points of that final spot, so it’s looking tough for the Bruins to make the postseason.
The Bruins, who have been among the league’s best teams for so long, are seemingly looking to retool and will likely sell off some players, including maybe Carlo, before the deadline.
