Popular Alberta waterfalls hit with some closures as construction ramps up

A popular set of falls in western Alberta is seeing some temporary closures this month, as construction on a viewing platform grinds on.

Alberta Parks issued a notice on its website late last week advising visitors that the Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area view platform is seeing some construction, and it’s set to continue throughout this month.

During this period, there will be intermittent, temporary closures of select viewing platforms and staircases to accommodate the work.

“Construction equipment and a construction crew will be on site. The Government of Alberta is committed to ensuring all visitors have a safe experience in our parks, and all visitors are prohibited from going beyond the barriers set in place,” the notice added.

Visitors are asked to follow the direction of all signage and personnel in the area and stay out of active construction zones.

This isn’t the first time the falls have been closed for construction. In the summer of 2024, it reopened after construction expanded its parking; improved access roads, trails, and day-use areas; and improved viewing areas to take in the falls and upgraded safety measures, including signage and wayfinding.

The roaring Crescent Falls plummets 30 metres over two ledges and offers breathtaking views of the Bighorn River Valley. It is approximately half an hour west of Nordegg.
