Craig Conroy isn't the only Calgary Flames executive to get a contract extension

GM Craig Conroy isn’t the only part of the Calgary Flames management staff to receive a contract extension.

Though it has been known for a few days, the Flames officially announced on Friday that they have signed Conroy to a two-year extension. It was actually agreed upon before the 2025-26 season began, the team confirmed.

Along with Conroy, assistant GM Dave Nonis received a two-year extension, as did their other assistant GM in Brad Pascall. These are all moves that the vast majority of the fan base is happy to see.

What won’t be nearly as popular, however, is that the president of hockey operations, Don Maloney, also received a two-year extension. Maloney has been a hot topic amongst Flames fans after a series of recent interviews, which didn’t sit well with most. In fact, many have been spamming the Flames’ social media channels in hopes of getting him fired.

Either way, the combined four of Conroy, Nonis, Pascall and Maloney will now be under contract through the 2027-28 season. Whether they stick around past that will depend greatly on the moves they make in the immediate future as they look to slowly build this team from the ground up into a contender.

“It’s super exciting,” Conroy said in an interview with Chris Wahl. “I couldn’t be more proud to be the GM of the Calgary Flames and have the leadership group along with me. We know we have some work to do, but we’re really looking forward to it. For me and my family, it’s a great day.”

The Flames are the NHL’s worst team from a points percentage perspective, though that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They are currently in a great position to land a top-three pick at the upcoming draft for the first time in franchise history, which would go a long way in helping them turn things around.

With their struggles, there has been plenty of speculation about veteran players like Rasmus Andersson, Blake Coleman, and Nazem Kadri being traded. Should any be moved, it will be imperative for Conroy and the rest of his recently extended staff to ensure they get the proper returns that will help shape the future of this organization.
