Calgary Flames fans are actively campaigning to get Maloney fired

Don Maloney continues to be public enemy number one amongst the Calgary Flames fan base.

The Flames’ president of hockey operations set off a firestorm in Calgary last week after two separate interviews with Sportsnet’s Brendan Parker and Eric Francis. In both, he was very defiant about the organization opting for a full-fledged rebuild, despite the fact that they sat dead last in the NHL standings at the time both took place.

Maloney also made it clear that the organization won’t lean into what’s been a poor first quarter of the season, referring to landing a top prospect such as Gavin McKenna as “fantasy hockey.”

The comments came across as tone deaf, given that a vast majority of Flames fans want to see this team bottom out in order to morph into a contender in the upcoming years.

Suffice to say, Maloney’s comments did not, and continue not to sit well with the fan base.

Flames fans on social media are working together to try and actively get the team to fire Maloney, who has been with the organization since he was hired as a pro scout back in 2016. He became the vice president of hockey operations in 2017, and remains in that role today.

If you take a look at any recent Instagram post from the Flames, you will see tons of comments from many different accounts pleading with the team to fire Maloney. The reaction on X is quite similar, as well.

The Flames took to X on Tuesday night ahead of the CHL USA Prospects Challenge to show a cool new centre-ice design they put in for the highly anticipated game.

Rather than join in on the excitement, Flames fans once again took it as an opportunity to mock Maloney’s recent comments.

Despite all the frustration directed at Maloney, the Flames are actually in a good position to land a top pick at the 2026 draft. A current three-game winning streak has placed them ahead of the Nashville Predators, but they still sit 31st in the NHL standings.

At this point, it looks like fantasy could soon become reality for the Flames and their fan base.
