Calgary Flames fans have mixed reaction to reported Conroy extension

After plenty of chatter in recent days, the Calgary Flames have reportedly signed GM Craig Conroy to an extension.

The deal has not yet been officially confirmed by the organization, but it is believed to be a two-year deal.

It’s believed that this deal had been agreed upon for some time, but the Flames were unsure of when to announce it, given their rough season to date. With all the controversy following recent comments from Don Maloney, they had little choice but to do so now.

Conroy, who was named the Flames’ GM ahead of the 2022-23 season, was dealt a tough hand in the early going. He was forced to move out several veterans who wanted to be elsewhere, and is only now starting to put his fingerprint on this roster. Giving him a few more years to see what he can do is the rational approach, and one that some fans seem to be quite pleased with.

“Conroy needed time to clean up Tre’s mess and build towards the future. He is the only one trying to get young elite talent on this team,” one fan wrote on X.

That said, not everybody is on the same page as to the work Conroy has done thus far. Those who were hoping to see a competitive Flames team this season seem to have some reservations as to whether or not an extension was the right decision.

“Why does everyone think he deserves an extension? He hasn’t done anything positive since he’s been in the role,” another fan chimed in.

Others, meanwhile, question just how much control he will have while still continuing to work alongside Maloney, a man who doesn’t seem to have any sort of interest in a full rebuild.

Though the reaction is mixed at this time, Conroy will now have a longer opportunity to truly begin shaping this roster the way he sees fit. One of the biggest moves he’ll have in the near future will be with Rasmus Andersson, a player who should be able to net a big return should he indeed be shipped out ahead of the trade deadline.
