Sounds like Rasmus Andersson may be flip-flopping on his Calgary Flames future

It doesn’t appear as though Rasmus Andersson is entirely on board with this being his final season in a Calgary Flames sweater.

The 29-year-old defenceman is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. With the Flames near the bottom of the NHL standings, the expectation is that he will be moved before the trade deadline. That said, should the Flames offer him a contract extension he sees as fair value, it sounds as though he may be open to sticking around in Calgary.

“One of the things I’ve heard about Andersson is that he changes his mind on staying or going like you and I change socks,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast. “Last year, and the end of the year, he was like ‘I don’t think I should come back.’ Then he shows up at training camp, and he’s like, ‘I think I might want to stay.'”

Friedman did allude to the fact, however, that an extension may be tough to work out. This is likely Andersson’s last opportunity to cash in on a big contract, and it doesn’t sound as though talks between his agent and the Flames brass are particularly close at this time.

“He’s gotta find a deal that both sides are comfortable signing. Right now, they’re not. They’re not even close, from what I understand,” Friedman said.

After a disappointing 2024-25 season, Andersson has bounced back in 2025-26. He’s picked up 10 points in his last five games to give him 16 on the season. The veteran blueliner is being relied upon a ton, having averaged 24:25 minutes of ice time through 24 games.

Given the position the Flames find themselves in, trading Andersson rather than extending him is a decision that most of the fan base seems to believe is the right idea. Should that happen, it will be up to GM Craig Conroy to ensure he is able to bring in a good package for the right-shot defenceman.
