An Alberta town was just recognized as the friendliest small town in the province, being noted for its Rocky Mountain setting and welcoming community spirit.

Out of all the great spots in the province, World Atlas, one of the largest publishing resources in geography, named Canmore as the friendliest small town in Alberta.

Located just over an hour from Calgary, Canmore is a stunning Rocky Mountain town known for its scenic surroundings, rich history, and outdoor activities. It’s even been named one of the top detour destinations in the world

Originally established as a mining town supporting the Canadian Pacific Railway, Canmore was a key coal-producing hub until the last mine closed in 1979.

In 1981, Calgary won the bid to host the 1988 Olympics, and Canmore was chosen to host cross-country and biathlon events, helping cement the community as a top destination for winter activities.

World Atlas also pointed out the town’s downtown core as part of its appeal. “Along with its legacy of outdoor activities, the Olympics also left behind something else: top-level service, friendly, helpful attitudes, and a welcoming atmosphere.”

Another draw to the town’s friendly atmosphere is its strong lineup of community festivals. The Canmore Folk Music Festival has become Alberta’s longest-running folk festival, bringing live music and visitors to the mountain community each summer.

Just a few weeks after that, the town hosts the Canmore Highland Games, a celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture that features traditional events, music, and community gathering.

Beyond its events and scenery, the town is also recognized for its strong sense of safety and low crime rates. A recent town survey found that 99 per cent of residents reported feeling safe in the town.
