FIFA to rank Canada higher than ever before in men's soccer

The Canadian men’s national soccer team has risen to new heights.

Canada is projected to move up one spot, to 30th in the world, when the next FIFA men’s rankings are released. It’ll be the highest men’s FIFA ranking Canada has ever achieved.

Canada earned 15.62 rankings points by beating the United States on Sunday, which secured third place at the Nations League Finals.

Many believe this current group, which features the likes of Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Stephen Eustaquio, is the best men’s team Canada has ever assembled. Their back line, in particular, is much improved from the last World Cup, with the emergence of Alistair Johnston, Moïse Bombito and Derek Cornelius.

Canada is now close behind Sweden (28th place) and Wales (29th) in the world rankings and ahead of Serbia (31st) and Egypt (32nd). USA (16th in the world) remains the top country in Concacaf, followed by Mexico (17th), Canada (30th), Panama (33rd), and Costa Rica (54th).

Argentina will remain the top-ranked men’s soccer team in the world, followed by France (2nd), Spain (3rd), England (4th), and Brazil (5th).

It wasn’t long ago that Canada was a laughing stock in the world of men’s soccer. The national team reached an all-time low in 2014, when Canada was ranked 122nd in the world. Just five years ago, Canada ranked 70th.

Canada skyrocketed up the charts prior to qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reaching 33rd in the world. But the program had a lull afterward, dropping to 53rd by December 2022.

The national team has been rejuvenated since Jesse Marsch took over as head coach last year, beginning with a surprise run to the semi-final at the Copa America.

The next world ranking will be a feather in the cap for Marsch and company, but they have their sights set higher with the FIFA World Cup coming to Canada for the first time.
