Huge 31-storey residential tower in the works for downtown Calgary

A new skyscraper is set to join the Calgary skyline, with work underway on a 31-storey residential tower.
The new building, called Onyx, is being developed by Cantiro in collaboration with GEC Architecture.
The tower will be located at 4th Avenue and 6th Street in downtown Calgary and will feature 315 purpose-built rental homes, ranging from one-bedroom suites to larger executive units on the upper floors.
The upper-floor units will offer views of the city, while the building itself will feature a distinct colour scheme inspired by Calgary.

According to the project details, Onyx is also the first phase of a larger development planned for the area.
Future phases are expected to bring more residential options and community spaces to the neighbourhood to create a larger mixed-use community in downtown Calgary.
The project is designed to bring more people into the downtown core, offering a range of rental options for those looking to live closer to the city’s restaurants, shops, businesses, and other amenities.
While the first phase will focus on the 315 rental homes, the larger vision is to create a transit-oriented community with more housing and shared spaces as the development continues.
Construction began in 2026, with the tower expected to be completed in 2028.
Onyx is just one of many Calgary residential developments in the works with a focus on transit-oriented living. A 500-unit apartment complex is under construction near the Heritage CTrain Station, while over 1,500 residential units have been proposed near the Brentwood Station.
