It appears Craig Conroy won’t be a lame-duck general manager much longer.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the Calgary Flames are nearing a contract extension with the 54-year-old GM.

Conroy entered the season with just one year remaining on his contract with the club after being named general manager on May 23, 2023.

He has overseen a Flames club in transition since then. During his first year in charge, the Flames finished 11th overall in the Western Conference with 81 points. They exceeded expectations last season by finishing with 96 points, although they just barely missed the playoffs.

This season, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NHL.

Conroy has consistently made moves with an eye to the future. He received good value in trades for veterans such as Elias Lindholm and Jacob Markstrom, even if he didn’t get as much value for Noah Hanifin.

He traded other veterans, such as Chris Tanev and Andrew Mangiapane, for future assets as well.

Conroy has gone about locking up some of the Flames’ best young players, as Dustin Wolf and Matt Coronato were given long-term contract extensions last offseason.

Before being named Flames general manager, Conroy spent nine of his 16 NHL seasons in Calgary. He has worked his way up the Flames’ managerial depth chart soon after retiring, being named special assistant to the general manager in 2014, nine years before being named GM.
