‘Tis the month of a brand new season and we simply cannot contain our excitement! Winter is fun, but it’s time to move on to a new phase, raise the temperature here in the city, and welcome the fresh bloom in our gardens – it’s about time, don’t you agree?

With March comes two major holidays that are both cause for celebration. First up, get ready to raise a green beer, tap your toes, and party like the Irish. You can bet there are many a green shindig happening all over the city, so you’ll have no excuse not to head out to join in on the shenanigans!

Hit the Slopes

  • What: Our mountainous backyard is just waiting for us with a fluffy layer of the white stuff, perfect for winter sports and activities. Take advantage and get some spring shredding in, or take your snowshoes for an adventure around one of the many picturesque lakes that the Rockies have to offer.

Stargazing at the Banff Gondola

  • What: There is something surreal about stargazing at the top of a mountain. Glide up to the brand-new observation deck of the Banff Gondola summit and discover star clusters, galaxies, the Milky Way, Mars, and the Moon with two professional guides from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. If it turns out to be a cloudy evening, the astronomers will take you inside the terminal where you will continue to learn about these celestial objects. *Dress in winter appropriate clothing and expect cold temperatures and wind!*

  • What: Skate amidst the beauty of downtown Calgary at everyone’s favourite outdoor rink.

Toonie Day

  • What: Ski Mt. Norquay for only $2 on March 7 – yes, that is less than a cup of coffee! If you thought this deal couldn’t get any better, think again. Not only do you ski for $2, but your money is also donated to a local charity at the end of the season. Help them beat their $20,000 total from last year!

Go Snowshoeing

  • Take in the crisp outdoor air and the picturesque views as you march your way through the many trails in and around the Calgary area – plus, it’s a great workout! If you’re are more of an inner city roamer, check out Fish Creek Park Or Nose Hill for some fantastic trails closer to home. If you’re interested in taking a drive out to the Rockies, Canmore, Bragg Creek, and Banff all boast unreal trail paths that lead to some magical destinations. Be sure to check trail reports before heading out, and dress for the weather!

Cross Country Skiing

  • What: Cross Country Skiing can be wildly underestimated as a sport, but it is really a great workout and can be a great way to be active while enjoying the beauty of a snow-covered landscape. The best part is that you don’t even have to go very far from Calgary for a snowy cross-country skiing adventure.
  • Where: Check out one of the many popular cross-country skiing areas within the city, such as Fish Creek Park, Confederation Golf Course, Lakeview Golf Course, or South Glenmore Park. If you are interested in travelling a little bit further, check out areas just outside of the city limits, such as West Bragg Creek, Ribbon Creek, Canmore Nordic Centre, Mt. Frida Kahlo: Her Photos
