Calgary neighbourhood getting new playground after 13-year wait
A Calgary neighbourhood is finally getting a new playground after more than a decade of community efforts to bring a new one to the area.
Construction on a new playground in Arbour Lake is set to begin this month, with the playspace expected to open in October.
According to the City, the playground will be located outside of the Arbour Lake Residents’ Association (ALRA) building, which is also home to a daycare.
The City says that for roughly 13 years, the existing playground has been off-limits to children at the daycare due to provincial licensing requirements. While the City considered the equipment to meet municipal standards, it did not meet the requirements needed for the daycare to use it.

Last year, the City fenced off the existing playground and posted signs saying the equipment had reached the end of its lifecycle and would eventually be removed.
That left the community looking for a new solution, and for over a year, the ALRA worked through funding, design and approvals to make the new playground a reality.

The new playground is set to be a modern and inclusive playspace. Once complete, it will give children at the daycare a dedicated place to play while also providing a new outdoor space for families in the neighbourhood to enjoy.
Calgary’s parks and playgrounds have seen some pretty great upgrades this year. A new park opened up back in August that now features Calgary’s tallest slide at 3.5 storeys high, and a popular park opened up after $3.6 million in upgrades. There is also still more to come, with construction moving ahead on Richmond Green Park.
