If you’re looking for a neat experience this summer, a suspension bridge tucked away in the woods of the Alberta Rockies is a must-do.

Nestled in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, the Blackshale Suspension Bridge is a great bucket-list summer experience in Alberta, with the bridge only open in the warmer months.

The 240-foot-long bridge typically opens in early May and closes to the public in November, or whenever snowfall accumulations occur. Recent reports indicate that there is no snow on the bridge itself, meaning that the dazzling views of the forest, mountains, and creek below are all yours to enjoy when you visit.

How to get to the Blackshale Suspension Bridge

Alberta Parks says that parking and access to the High Rockies trail for the Blackshale Suspension Bridge are available from the Black Prince Day Use. You can use the South Spray Lakes Map for trail directions and navigation. This section of the trail to the bridge is 6.8 kilometres return. It can also be visited via a shorter one-kilometre route from the Smith-Dorrien Trail, according to Travel Alberta.

Remember, since this suspension bridge is in Kananaskis, a conservation pass is required for the area. Only one pass is required per vehicle, and there’s no extra cost for trailers or additional passengers. If you only need a day pass, it will cost $15 per vehicle. If you visit often enough, we recommend splurging on the annual pass for $90. It registers up to three vehicles and pays for itself after only six trips.
