ASIRT investigating after a suspect dies in CPS custody this morning

One person is dead and another is in hospital facing life-threatening injuries following a series of incidents early Wednesday morning.

A release from the Calgary Police Service states that officers were called to a pedestrian-involved hit and run at around 3:40 am at the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and 52nd Street NE, finding a person suffering life-threatening injuries who was promptly transported to hospital.

Police then found a suspect vehicle a short while later, according to the release, around 68th Sctreet and 32nd Avenue NE.

“Officers attempted to arrest the driver and a struggle ensued,” police say.

“Immediately upon arrest, the driver appeared to go into medical distress and was subsequently transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of death is not known at this time.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating the situation.
