The Alberta winter forecast may not be so cute for some areas
While some parts of Alberta have recently seen snow, a new winter forecast is hinting at what the province can expect to see for the season.
Canada’s winter forecast for 2026-2027 has been released by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, and it’s giving a very different outlook depending on what part of the province you live in.
So, what will Winter 2026–2027 bring across Canada, and specifically Alberta? Let’s take a look.

For central and southern Alberta, which includes areas like Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Banff, Edmonton, and Jasper, this upcoming winter is looking a little milder than usual.
Temperatures are forecast to be above normal, with the coldest periods hitting in late December, mid-January, and mid-February.
Above-normal precipitation is forecast for the western Prairies, which may be welcome news to skiers and snowboarders, if snow can stick around. The snowiest periods are forecast to occur in late December, early January, and mid-February.
Northern Alberta is not looking so sweet this winter, with the forecast coming in as cold and snowy for areas like Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Slave Lake, Cold Lake, High Level, Peace River, and Fort Chipewyan. Sounds like those areas will have a winter to bundle up for!
In addition to the northwestern Prairies seeing above-normal snowfall this winter, it’s also expected across Atlantic Canada, southern Quebec, southern Ontario, northern British Columbia, and southern Nunavut.
“Canada is simply too vast for a one-size-fits-all winter forecast. This season, much of the south and far north are likely to enjoy milder-than-average conditions, while colder weather settles across parts of the middle of the country. Snow lovers may find plenty to celebrate in portions of both the east and west,” said Carol Connare, editor-in-chief, The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

As we fly towards winter, there has been a flurry of early winter forecasts for the province. OpenSnow, a U.S.-based forecast service, is calling for above-normal temperatures for a large chunk of Alberta, including areas like Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.
