If you’re looking for a spot to retire in Alberta, a historic town just south of Calgary made a list of the best retirement towns in the province.
World Atlas, one of the largest publishing resources in geography, recently released its list of the eight best retirement towns in Alberta, and High River made the cut.
The publication looked at towns that have great scenery, emergency care, and senior housing close by to pick the eight best spots.
“Alberta proves you don’t have to choose between mountain views and a good hospital. You could retire 80 kilometres from Banff, settle on a sandy lakefront, or live near a centre where owls fly overhead.”
With a population of just over 14,000, High River is known for its small-town feel and proximity to the city, prairies, and foothills.

World Atlas touted the High River General Hospital, which offers a range of services, including an emergency department, cancer care, cardiology, physiotherapy, surgery, hearing services, colonoscopy, radiology, gynecology, laboratory services, respiratory care, nutrition, urology, and social work.
As for senior housing, World Atlas pointed to two options in the town. “Senior housing includes Seasons High River and Abbeyfield House, a nonprofit option for older adults who want community, privacy, security, and independence without full-time medical care.”
High River also has plenty of recreational and cultural amenities, including access to Frank Lake, which sits just 10 kilometres east of the town and offers amazing birdwatching opportunities.
