Cowichan Trading Company closing with major sale after decades in Victoria

Victoria is about to lose a piece of its heritage as the Cowichan Trading Company, a family-run shop that has operated since 1947, prepares to close its doors.

For locals and tourists, this iconic corner store at Government and Lower Johnson (LoJo) has been the go-to spot for authentic Cowichan sweaters, Indigenous Pacific Northwest art, and handcrafted jewellery.

Cowichan Trading Company has been central to Victoria’s vibrant shopping scene, offering timeless pieces that represent Indigenous art and traditions. The shop’s current owners, who have maintained the business for decades, are holding a major sale with 40% off everything in-store and select items at 50% off.

With the building now listed at nearly $13,000 per month, it marks a challenging chapter for Victoria’s small businesses — even those with decades of history. This year, another cherished shop specializing in Indigenous art, the Sasquatch Trading Company, closed its doors.

Vancouver Island Brewing shuttered its operations due to a 35% rent increase at its Government Street location, and Little Jumbo closed this past October, citing a staggering 40% rent increase.

The arts and culture sector has been hit hard too, as several music venues have closed, including Upstairs Hermann’s and the Victoria Event Centre. And just yesterday, Quadratic Sound announced it would cease performances.

In the meantime, Cowichan Trading Company remains open, so for those hoping to grab a last piece of this legacy, now is the time to head over to 1328 Government Street and take home a bit of Victoria’s heritage before it’s gone.

The store has yet to make an official statement, but Daily Hive has reached out for more details.
