As strong winds whip across the coast, travellers heading to and from Vancouver Island should be prepared for potential disruptions to BC Ferries sailings this Friday evening.

The transportation service has issued a warning that several routes, specifically between Victoria, Vancouver, and Nanaimo, may face cancellations due to the weather.

BC Ferries has identified the following sailings as potentially at risk:

Swartz Bay – Tsawwassen

7 pm departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
7 pm departing Swartz Bay (Victoria)
9 pm departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
9 pm departing Swartz Bay (Victoria)

Duke Point – Tsawwassen

8:15 pm departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
8:15 pm departing Duke Point (Nanaimo)
10:45 pm departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
10:45 pm departing Duke Point (Nanaimo)

Departure Bay – Horseshoe Bay

6:35 pm departing Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver)
8:45 pm departing Departure Bay (Nanaimo)

The risk of cancellations comes as Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for West Vancouver Island and the northern edge of East Vancouver Island. Special weather statements are also in effect for the rest of the island, forecasting strong winds throughout the day.

BC Ferries is advising all passengers to keep an eye on conditions as they unfold. With a number of travellers still affected by power outages caused by earlier storms, this latest weather system could add additional stress for those hoping to get on or off the island.
