
Jesper Sørensen’s first year with the Vancouver Whitecaps couldn’t have gone much better.
He navigated a plethora of injuries to key players, leading the Whitecaps to their best-ever season on the pitch.
It was a season so impressive that German soccer star Thomas Müller was intrigued enough to sign with the club.
Sørensen led the Whitecaps to the MLS Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history, where they were an Emmanuel Sabbi kick away from taking a second-half lead.
With the Whitecaps entering the season with higher expectations than ever before, the club announced on Friday that the man who led them there in the first place.
Vancouver revealed on Friday that the Danish head coach has been locked up through the 2027-28 season.
That means Sørensen is under contract for the next three seasons. The Whitecaps are on the cusp of beginning their 2026 MLS campaign, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 21, versus Real Salt Lake. In 2027, the MLS will play a shortened 14-game campaign from February to May, before the new schedule in 2027-28 aligns with international soccer, beginning in July 2027.
“Jesper has done an outstanding job developing our team and establishing a clear, modern playing identity,” Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said in a press release.
“He is the right person to lead this group forward and continue building a competitive, resilient team that reflects who we are as a club,” he said.
Multiple Whitecaps players had career seasons under Sørensen in 2025. Sebastian Berhalter broke out as a key roster player, being named team MVP.
Tristan Blackmon had his best MLS season to date as well, which led to him being MLS Defender of the Year.
The 52-year-old head coach also helped develop young players, such as teenage forward Rayan Elloumi.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support of our players, technical and support staff, front office, and of course, our fans over the course of my first season at the club,” Sørensen said in a press release.
Now that he’s under contract for the next three seasons, the Whitecaps have their leader locked up, with their MLS Cup contention window wide open.
Their journey starts on Saturday against Real Salt Lake at BC Place, with kickoff at 4:30 p.m. This will be the Whitecaps’ 500th MLS regular-season match, and they’ll show off their new jerseys to fans in attendance.
