It was one of the most incredible seasons in Vancouver sports history.
The Vancouver Whitecaps were so close to ending their Cinderella season with a championship. However, it wasn’t meant to be.
After conceding the first tally of the game after an own goal, the Whitecaps cranked up the heat against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Final.
They largely controlled play for the next 50+ minutes of the matchup after going down by a goal, before Canadian Ali Ahmed tied the game in the 60th minute.

Just minutes later, Emmanuel Sabbi had a chance to give the Whitecaps the lead, but he hit both posts.

That was a moment Whitecaps fans will think about for years to come. What could have been.
After Sabbi came within inches of scoring the biggest potential goal in Whitecaps, it was Messi’s time to shine.
In the 71st minute, the Argentinian superstar found his countryman, Rodrigo De Paul, who scored the go-ahead goal for Miami.

That goal would stand as the game-winner.
For good measure, Messi would set up another Argentinian, Tadeo Allende, for a Cup-clinching goal in the 96th minute.
“Sadly, we gave it away,” Thomas Müller said after the loss.
“In too many situations, we didn’t play the way we could have played it,” he said.
It’s a heartbreaking loss, but the Whitecaps should hold their heads high after an incredible season.
During a time when the top ticket in town, the Vancouver Canucks, sit at the bottom of the standings, the Whitecaps gave the city a realistic shot at a championship.
The Whitecaps ended up as MLS Cup runners-up, even though no one expected them to be here at the beginning of the season.
They inspired a watch party at BC Place on Saturday that was nearly the same size as the crowd that witnessed the game itself down in Florida.

Not only that, but they inspired a swath of fans to follow them down to Fort Lauderdale for the Cup Final.

Vancouver showed resiliency throughout the season, to the point where their success helped recruit German superstar Thomas Müller to the city.
The Whitecaps’ season is over, but it won’t soon be forgotten.
